How to Write Successful Craigslist Ads - 3 Tips You Can't Afford To Miss

In this article we are going to discuss how to write successful Craigslist ads in such a way as to ensure they STANDOUT in the similar sea of sameness that CL has become. If you've spent any time browsing the listings, or have placed ads yourself, (especially in the larger cities) the most notable characteristic of the marketplace is the absolute glut of similar offers. It can be daunting to dip your big toe in such a large ocean of overlapping opportunities, and many people I work with simply give up rather than compete for the avalanche of eyeballs that Craigslist brings to the party. This is, in my opinion, a pretty big mistake. Let's take a quick look at how you can optimize your ads to standout and stand alone when making your offer to the marketplace at large.

Your Keyboard is Your Friend

One of the easiest ways to add some interactivity to your ad, ( as well as to add uniqueness to each listing if you are an active poster) is to use the cacophony of interesting characters you can create with your keyboard. Stars, musical notes, sun, moon, you name it, you can create it. I've been preaching this for close to a year, and recently have become much more common in the marketplace, but these ads are still in the MINORITY, giving you a unique competitive advantage over most of your less resourceful competition.

Specificity is Key

So few people do this that I find it genuinely perplexing. If you are posting in Los Angeles, use a LA "flag" in your title. For example - rather than gearing a work at home opportunity to the general marketplace, why not specifically call out a subset of the larger market you are targeting like this: "An open letter to EVERY work at home Mom in Los Angeles". Or like this: " Only for Philadelphian's 20 pounds overweight, or more". These ads will outperform EVERY general ad you running right now, I guarantee it.

All Roads Lead to the Same Place

In your ad copy itself, you should have MULTIPLE ways for people to access your ultimate offer. Only very smart marketers are doing this, and you can tell the clueless, from the clued in by this simple distinction. Use image oriented ads that have multiple calls to action, an email embedded in the image, a URL embed and even a phone number, or alternate contact point. Studies repeatedly show the more opportunities you give people to bond with your offer, the more of those eyeballs will ultimately become your paying customers.
And of course there is more, but if you simply apply the three tips above into your next CL advertising campaign, I guarantee you will see control busting results that will make you smile. Good luck!
